LIGHTING

Goals and Objectives

Lighting is an integral part of a Sanctuary. Lighting can be used in more ways than just allowing people to see.

The sanctuary lighting system also will determine some people's ability to hear the person speaking. Anyone over the age of thirty has some level of hearing loss. To compensate for this lose, virtually everyone relies on some level of lip reading.

in most churches, the design should utilize theatrical and architectural lighting.
  • Theatrical lighting should be used in the platform area.
  • Theatrical lighting may be used in the altar area in the ministry uses this area during the praise and worship or sermon portion of the service
  • Architectural lighting can be used in the congregational seating area.
Considerations
  • At minimum the theatrical lighting design should provide an infrastructure to support two looks.
  • The key in making a system upgradeable is the infrastructure.
  • All of the light in the sanctuary space should be controlled by a central console and dimmer rack.
  • Additional remote controls should be place at key locations at more than one sanctuary entrance for walkthrough/janitor lighting.
  • Although intelligent lighting can be outside the budget of some ministries, the support infrastructure is inexpensive.
